Did you know that a vegan diet is the only diet that has been proven to reverse the effects of heart disease?! Most people in western societies actually have fatty streaks in their arteries by the age of 10. These fatty streaks come from the consumption of saturated fats and LDL cholesterol, both are in animal products at extremely high levels. Eventually the fatty streaks turn into plaque build up which then brings on a smorgasboard of health issues.
These diseases include heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Red meat and processed meat are now classified by the world health organization (WHO) as a group 1 carcinogen. This is the same group that cigarettes are in. I should say though, that this doesn’t mean they are equally harmful, but that they both have significant enough evidence to be deemed as cancer causing. The Global Burden of Disease Project has estimated that diets high in red meat could be responsible for 50 000 cancer deaths per year worldwide!
That doesn’t even compare to the numbers heart disease takes though. 17.7 million lives are taken every year due to heart disease or cardiovascular disease (CVD). That is 31% of the worlds population. Of course there will be some genetic and naturally occurring heart disease, but this epidemic has only recently occurred in the human timeline. Right after we had the agricultural revolution, disease was bred from animals and disease was created from consuming these animals.
An omnivorous diet for humans is also unnecessary and inefficient. Everyone knows you can survive without animal products, otherwise I wouldn’t be writing this, but the consumption of animal products for nutrition is a highly inefficient system. Firstly, we have to address the common misconception that we need meat and dairy for its protein, because plants just don’t have enough. This is not the case. The animals we eat in fact, eat the same foods that we are built to eat like soy beans, grains and veggies. The animal then gets all it’s nutrients from these foods, then when they are killed for food their flesh contains the nutrients. In this system not only are you wasting time and recycling nutrients before you even get them, you are also adding disease-causing things to the mix, the previously mentioned saturated fat and cholesterol.
