You come out of the change room ready to start your fitness journey, but when you take your first step on the gym floor, you suddenly feel the burn of 1000 eyes staring at your lose clothes & skinny demeanor.
First of all, I have empathy.
I still remember my first year or two in the gym and man would I get anxious. It can be super easy to feel small, pathetic and weak when you walk into a gym for the first time. Like a lot of people, I too struggled at points with anxiety in the gym. But if I had never tried to overcome this form of insecurity, I would have never made any gains. The anxiety, and in the way I was handling it, would be too strong for me to properly focus on pushing myself beyond my limits.
Here are 3 ideas/perspectives I had to reinforce in myself to successfully overcome the gym induced anxiety.
- Everybody Started with Nothing.
- People Focus on themselves.
- Not Giving a Sh*t is admirable.
Everybody Started with Nothing
No matter who you are, you weren’t born jacked or fit, but you were born with something far more powerful-potential. From that guy whose arms are bigger than your head to that strong woman who is turning heads, they started from the same inexperienced place you are in now.
The only difference between the individuals in the gym you admire or intimidated by, is time. In particular, Time, Consistency, Dedication & Perseverance.
Keeping this in mind, you know all you need to do is keep pushing. The best way to do this is with an exercise plan. With a proper plan in place, you can shift your focus from what others are thinking of you, to what you think of yourself. Make who you were yesterday your competition today.
People Focus on Themselves
If you see anyone in the gym with an impressive physique or capabilities, they probably don’t see you. This is because of two reasons; success comes from focus & thinking about the judgment of others is just a distraction.
Everybody is different but were also all the same. Those admirable individuals are really only focused on themselves, they don’t have the time or energy to worry about your physical attributes & abilities. If they do, they are on the path to failure while you are on your way to success.
Not Giving a Sh*t is admirable.
If you want to turn the right kind of heads, stop giving a sh*t. Don’t give a sh*t about; what others think of you, what you think you look like, or where you think you should be.
The only thing you want on your mind during your fitness journey is what you could do yesterday, and how you can improve. If you allow yourself to fall in this mindset, before you know it, some stranger will randomly show YOU some form of admiration.
Your energy, confidence, and capabilities will skyrocket if you can focus on these 3 things. Knowing the only person you have to be better than is your yesterday self, is a very magical place to live.
